PRODUCTION SETUP FOR PC/PPC-BASED SYSTEMS w/ Windows 2000 BKT & RLL 04-Oct-02

Note:	There will be two Ethernet cards, one that is provided by the computer
manufacturer and a second one by a third-party vendor. One will be used
to connect to the customer LAN and one will be used as a dedicated link
to the PowerPPC. Which one you use for which purpose is up to you. Be
aware however that certain brands of Ethernet card can exhibit strange
behavior such as periodic hesitation when talking to the PowerPC. Also,
some Ethernet boards do not allow you to turn off auto network speed
negotiation, or do not allow network speed or duplex mode to be configured,
which causes big problems with the PowerPC. You may have to switch cards
	if you experience problems.

In the following, for expository purposes, the first Ethernet card is
assumed to be connected to the PowerPC, and the second to the customer LAN.

WINDOWS 2000 INSTALLATION AND SETUP:

Note: Do not install the second Ethernet card yet.

1) Most computers will auto-install the operating system from disk images provided
by the manufacturer when power is turned on for the first time.

2) With Windows 2000 installed, the built-in Ethernet Interface has already been
configured. Go to the Start/Settings/Network and Dial-up Connections menu
	and find:

		Local Area Connection

Click on this and get a panel where you can click on "Properties" button,
which calls another panel where you can select what components are used by
the connection. If the NetBEUI Protocol is NOT installed, then install this
feature first. When the s/w asks for disk, say "c:\i386" and the protocol
will be installed from the disk images. After installation, disable NetBEUI
for this adapter by clicking off the check mark. Make sure that the Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP) is checked. Also, check the mark in the lower left hand
corner of the panel that says: Show icon in taskbar when connected.

We will set up the TCP/IP parameters later.

3) Log on to Windows 2000 as administrator.

SECOND ETHERNET CARD INSTALLATION:

1) Before inserting the second Ethernet Card, run whatever pre-installation
software that the board vendor provides.

2) Turn off the computer and insert the card next to first Ethernet card.

3) Boot, wait for Windows 2000 to find the hardware. Then, run the install
process from the vendor CD-ROM to install drivers.

4) Now under the Start/Settings/Network and Dial-up Connections menu and find:

		Local Area Network #2

Enable NetBEUI for this adapter and you can connect to the local network.
Local Area Network #1 is going to the PowerPC.

It is a good idea to check the box for network connection icon on the taskbar
so you can see what's working and what's not.

HOST PC TCP/IP SETUP FOR THE ETHERNET LINK TO THE POWERPC:

Notes:	DO NOT use the internal built-in Ethernet adapter to connect to the PowerPC.
For some reason on most PCs the built-in Ethernet adapter is performance
limited, resulting in long message delays that cause the user interface to
hesitate periodically. USE THE EXTERNAL ETHERNET ADAPTER TO CONNECT TO THE
	POWERPC!

In the following it is assumed that the Ethernet adapter #2 (external)
connects to the PowerPC and Ethernet adapter #1 (internal) to the
	customer LAN.

1) Go to Start/Settings/Network and Dial-up Connections menu and find:

		Local Area Network #2

Click on the icon and select properties.
	Disable NetBEUI Protocol if enabled.
Click on TCP/IP Protocol and then click on Properties Button.

2) IP Address tab:
Adapter: <list varies according to installation>
	Specify an IP address:
		IP Address: 148.150.203.190
		Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
		Default Gateway:	(leave blank)

4) Back at Local Area Connection Properties, select the Ethernet adapter, press
	Configure and then set:

		Network Speed: 100Mbps
		Duplex Mode: Half

MICROSOFT PEER WEB SERVICES SETUP:

Note:	The name of the folder containing MTS software varies according to the
application, but here for expository purposes it will be called "custProj".

1) Go to Control Panels, Add/Remove Programs, and select

		Add/Remove Windows Components

When panel appears, select Internet Information Services to install
(This contains the required FTP service and the MS Peer Web Server)

Insert the Windows 2000 CD (may also be available on the Restore CD)
	and install.

3) Change FTP Publishing Directory to:	c:\custProj\bin.

	Select Start/Settings/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Internet Services.
Left-click on Default FTP Site listing & select Properties.
Select Home Directory Tab and enter default directory (c:\custProj\bin).
Select Security Accounts Tab and click OFF the allow anonymous connections.

4) Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management
/System Tools/Local Users and Groups/Users, and select New User under the
	Action Menu:

	Username: mts_rt
	Password: mts_rt
	Confirm Password: mts_rt
User Must Change Password ... off
	User Cannot Change Password: on
	Password Never Expires: on
	Account Disabled: off

Go to Groups under Computer Management and make sure that the mts_rt user
is a member of administrator; if not, click Add to add it to that group.

BIOS SETUP:

Remove annoying PC hardware "features", such as Energy Saver and Cover Lock.
(varies according to manufacturer). To get into BIOS setup mode, boot and
press whatever function key is required (varies according to manufacturer).

POWERPC EEPROM SETUP (if required):

When the PowerPC boots, it establishes a TCP/IP link to the host PC and
downloads its software. The IP of the PowerPC, the IP of the host PC,
and the name of the software file to be downloaded are stored in the
PowerPC's EEPROM. The boards that come from MTS stock are preprogrammed
with default values that are appropriate for most applications, and
therefore need not be changed. However, if an application requires
different parameters, you must do two basic steps:
	1) Reprogram the PowerPC's FLASH ROM to remove the code that copies the
default parameters from FLASH ROM to EEPROM. Otherwise even if you
change the EEPROM values, the next time the PowerPC is rebooted the
boot program in the FLASH ROM will overwrite them.
	2) Reprogram the PowerPC's EEPROM with the desired parameter values.

Step 1 is a relatively complex operation that is beyond the scope of this
document, but is written up in great detail in a document titled
		"VxWorks Flash Programming.doc"
which is distributed along with this document.

After Step 1, Step 2 is accomplished as follows:

	a) Attach the serial debug cable between the PowerPC and the host PC.
	b) Call up HyperTerminal terminal emulator program (in Start, Programs,
Accessories, Communications). First you may need to set up the PC's
	   communication port properties, as follows:
		Bits per second:	9600
		Data bits: 8
		Parity: None
		Stop bits: 1
		Flow control: Xon/Xoff
	c) Reboot the PowerPC with CTRL-X.
	d) Hit any key immediately after reboot sequence begins (the operative
word here is "immediately"; if you are a little slow it doesn't work).
   	   The "[VxWorks Boot]:" prompt appears.
	e) If desired, type "p" to view current settings.
	f) Type "c" to change.
	g) Cycle through parameters, typing:
		<CR> to leave unchanged
		"." <CR> to erase
		<modification> <CR>	to modify
	h) When done, the PowerPC parameters should look like this:
		boot device : dc
		processor number	: 0
		host name : host
file name : mv2400 (depends on processor)
inet on ethernet (e)	: 148.150.203.191 (depends on application)
host inet (h) : 148.150.203.190 (depends on application)
		user (u) : mts_rt
		ftp password (pw)	: mts_rt
		flags (f) : 0x8
		target name (tn)	: target0
startup script (s)	: startp0.vxc (depends on application)

	i) Type @<CR> or CTRL-X to reboot processor.

MTS SOFTWARE INSTALLATION:

Note:	The name of the folder containing MTS software varies according to the
application, but here for expository purposes it will be called "custProj".

Simply copy the necessary files & folder to folder "custProj". File and
folder names shown below are typical but may vary according to application:

	Required files:

	cust.exe	(GUI software)
	Calibration.cal	Sensor calibration file.
Settings.set	GUI and controller settings that vary according to test.
Table.dat	For multi-DOF seismic systems, contains table geometry
parameters, phyical limits, and engineering units.

	Required folder:

bin PowerPC realtime software, conditioner drivers,
			supervisory DLL, and simulation DLL.

Optional folders (i.e., not critical for running software):

Documents	Various configuration and help documents
			(including this document).
Kinematics	For multi-DOF systems, contains Matlab scripts and C code
used to develop and verify the coordinate transformations.
Matlab Various useful Matlab scripts such as those for reading,
writing, and viewing MTS binary data files,

CREATING A SIMULATION VERSION OF MTS SOFTWARE:

You can create a simulation version of the software that runs on any Windows PC.

1) Create a new folder, say "custSim".
2) Copy into this new folder the main application "cust.exe", as well as associated
data files such as "Calibration.cal", "Settings.set", and "Table.dat".
3) Also copy the folder "bin" into the new folder.
4) Open "Settings.set" with any text editor and locate at the top of the file the
keyworld "coopsDriver". Change its value from "Super.dll" to "SuperSim.dll".
5) Save the modified settings file as plain text.

When you start the main application, all functionality of the realtime version will
be available in the simulation, except possibly simulation of feedback signals,
which requires extras software.
